1/31/2024 0 Comments Quilt of valorOur QOV news and quilts can be seen in our Newsletter every month. In 2022 YTD QGbtS delivered 109 Quilts of Valor a total of 60 were made during the year. Even some service dogs received matching quilts this year. Our QOV program has earned a statewide reputation for the numbers of quilts as well as the quality of the quilts presented. Marine veteran and former News 8 anchor Jim Sinkovitz received one a few weeks ago, along with Vietnam Marine. These quilts are presented to veterans in a special ceremony in which our quilters “wrap” the veterans with the quilts. More than 320,000 Quilts of Valor have been awarded to veterans nationwide since 2012. These quilts are made to the specifications requested by the national QOV organization. Our QOV committee communicates with the staff at the VA in South Florida to arrange the distribution of the quilts. Workshops are held monthly to encourage members of all abilities to assist in the piecing of a Quilt of Valor quilt top and pillowcase. A local branch of a nonprofit that makes quilts for veterans is growing. You may also choose to bring your own fabrics, but we ask that you use only red, white, and blues to make your pillowcase. The pillowcases are used to put the Quilts of Valor in for distribution. Report the QOV as quickly as possible after the award. A QOV may be awarded in a presentation case, but this is not required. Please verify with them that have not previously received a Quilt of Valor. You may also choose to make a pillowcase. A Quilt of Valor may be awarded to a Service Member or Veteran known to you who has been touched by war. We will also have quilts that you may volunteer to bind. The cost is 24.99 + 5 media mail shipping. Some children even as young as 4 years old! No sewing experience needed! We have had men, women, and children attend and make a block. We will have a predetermined block pattern that you will follow that is simple enough for anyone to use in making their block. We will have sewing machines set up for those who do not have a sewing machine as well as pre-cut fabric available for anyone who wants to come and make a quilt block or stay and make several that will go into a QOV quilt.
